The recent report about the Cameroon refugees (Cameroon Asylum seekers) in Nigeria released by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on the 24th of January 2018, clearly revealed that Sisiku Ayuk Tabe and his cohorts; who were arrested on the 5th of January, 2018 by DSS in Abuja, Nigeria, have not been extradited to Cameroon. The report contradicts the report released by France 24, TV5 and other fake news media and blogs.

On the 24th of January 2018, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) published a situation report (on their official website) about the condition of the Cameroon refugees (Cameroon Asylum seekers) in Cross River, Taraba and Benue states in Nigeria .

The situation report clearly revealed that the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) had earlier asked the Nigeria government not to extradite Sisiku Ayuk Tabe and his cohorts to Cameroon and the Nigeria government reassured UNHCR that those detained would not be returned to Cameroon.

According to the UNHCR report, if the leadership of the pro-secession group is extradited to Cameroon, that can further escalate the Anglophone crisis and give birth to more refugees. The UNHCR may not be able to effectively cater for all their needs especially the Children who are not only in need of food but also Education.

This is the excerpt of the situation report which addressed the case Sisiku Ayuk Tabe and his cohorts.

The Government’s decision to intensify its military campaign against members of the pro-independent movement in Southern Cameroon is creating more population movement towards Nigeria in search of international protection. Civilians have allegedly being killed by security forces while the government has accused suspected separatists of being responsible for the death of more than 10 security personnel since the crisis intensified following the unilateral declaration of independence on October 1, 2017.

To ensure the proper management of the influx in line with international humanitarian principles, UNHCR is continuing its advocacy with Nigerian authorities to safeguard the rights of those fleeing the crisis and facilitate the provision of humanitarian assistance in safety and dignity. UNHCR has negotiated the release of some asylum seekers arrested by Nigerian authorities. For others still in detention, including the leadership of the pro-independence group, the government has agreed to grant UNHCR access for the determination of their status. The government has further reassured UNHCR that those detained would not be returned to Cameroon.
