CAMEROON NATIONAL COMMUNICATION COUNCIL HEADED BY PETER ESOKA SUSPENDED 21 MEDIA ORGANS FOR PUBLISHING FAKE NEWS

On the 18th ordinary session of the Cameroon National Communication Council meeting held in September,2017, the council examined twenty-one petitions filed against different media organs and Journalists in Cameroon.

In a communiqué released on the 21st of September,2017,  the Council’s Chairman, Peter Essoka detailed the decisions taken at the end of deliberations.

The National Communications Council suspended twenty-one news publications for a varied duration. The Council also suspended six journalists for none respect of journalistic codes.

The following media organs received a three month suspension.

-‘La Meteo”
- The Publisher of ‘La Primeur De L’info Plus’ newspaper
-‘L’ Epervier’ newspaper
-‘Matila’ Newspaper
- ‘L’ ANECDOTE’ newspaper
- ‘La Tornade’ Newspaper
-‘La Generation Libre’
-‘La Tribune De L’Est Economie’
-‘La Scene’
- L’Eveil Republicain Libre’

The lone radio suspended for a period of three months is ‘AMPLITUDE FM’ with the two programs ; ‘investigation’ and ‘Embouteillage’.

The Council issued warning to the publisher of “La Nouvelle Expression” newspaper for unbalanced reports.

The following journalists were suspended for a period of three (03) months for unfounded accusations, violation of the ethics and professional code of practice governing mass communication.

-Martinez Zogo and Dominque Tita of ‘Amplitude FM’
-James Bouma(‘L’ Epervier’ newspaper)
-Max de Kemka (‘L’ Epervier’ newspaper)
- Yves Marc Kamoun (‘La Meteo’)

-Martial T. Owono (‘L’ ANECDOTE’ newspaper)

The National Communication Council through the series of sanctions hope to reinforce order within the Cameroon media landscape.

  1. If the National communication Council should sanction media houses without sanctioning CRTV,then these media houses have a right to reject such sanctions

  2. The one that bothers me most is the warning to Le Messaged for "unbalanced reporting". This is an insult to our freedom of expression. News stories can only be true or false. A reporter does not have to balance his reports to please anyone.
